Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings

Each "Beyond the Headlines" show focuses on a different topic affecting the people who make up the fabric of the Bay Area. Today's show is about safety on our roadways, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists. Too many local residents have been killed and injured in pedestrian and bicycle-related incidents.

When we're traveling, we often find ourselves distracted or in a rush to get to an appointment. Everyone... pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers... needs to take responsibility for our roles when an accident occurs.

ABC7 News reported on a fatal accident the morning of May 23, 2013, when a bicyclist and garbage truck collided in the Mission District. The family of 21-year-old Dylan Mitchell joins us to talk about the young man whose life was tragically cut short.

Also, it's important to remember caution around our railroad tracks. A heartbroken East Bay mother has been making a public plea for young people to take their focus off their phones and pay more attention to their surroundings.
