POINT REYES, Calif. (KGO) -- A historic rescue boat, which was recently made famous by Hollywood, is in San Francisco.

The ship is Motor Lifeboat 36542, which was the first standard motor-propelled self-righting lifeboat adopted by the Coast Guard for lifesaving.

In the film "The Finest Hours," crewmen were shown using the boat in impossible conditions to rescue stranded sailors.

"It's a fabulous, fabulous boat. It's just a piece of history and there's many, many lives that have been saved. They owe their lives to this boat," said Gordon White with the Point Reyes National Seashore.

The lifeboat is in the middle of a two-day trip to the Coast Guard rescue station at Point Reyes where it will be placed on display.
