Lyrinda Snyderman and Dick Mallory from Petaluma were paddling their kayaks Sunday morning just yards from the whales.

The group spotted a swarm of birds, so they expected to see whales. But they didn't expect such a treat.

An up-close look at humpback whales feeding in the San Francisco Bay, what a treat!

"We saw them on occasion," said Snyderman. "Three at once coming up from the bottom like a polaris missile with their mouths open to capture all the water. We had never seen this behavior before in the bay."

It is indeed a rare sight. And it went on for 45 minutes.

Whales usually do lunge feeding in colder waters farther north.

Experts tell ABC7 News the whales are probably feasting on an abundance of herring in the bay.
