St. Patrick's Day festivities underway in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Saint Patrick's Day festivities are now underway throughout the Bay Area. While many say it's all about having fun with friends, law enforcement hopes people do it responsibly.

And as people take to the roads tonight, law enforcement will definitely be watching. So it's all about having some responsible fun. Crowds continue to grow at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in San Jose and many people told ABC7 News they look forward to this day all year long.

At the popular Irish pub on San Pedro Square it's easy to see there's enough green to go around.

"It makes us very proud, putting on an event like this is very worthwhile, people come out and appreciate our culture, appreciate where we come from," said David Mulvehill of O'Flaherty's Irish Pub.

Tradition rules the day, as revelers come out to celebrate. Mary O'Flaherty has owned the bar for 14 years, and says it's all about treating her guests like family.

"It's a day to celebrate Saint Patrick, first of all, and to celebrate the Irish tradition and each other," Mary O'Flaherty said.

As for public safety, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is urging partiers to designate a sober driver. They also have an important reminder for pedestrians.

"Still being careful not to step out into the roadway without looking, also if you see something on the road and you think somebody might be driving drunk, to go ahead and call 911 to report it, so that officers can respond," said Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Andrew Urena.

The luck of the Irish certainly won't bail anyone out if they've been drinking and choose to get behind the wheel.
