It happened near Conroe in Montgomery County last Friday night

CONROE, TX -- A Texas police officer is being heralded for putting his police cruiser and life in the path of a wrong-way driver going close to 100 miles an hour.

Dash cam video shows the suspect stop just in time as Sgt. Gary Sharpen prepared for impact last Friday night on I-45 near Conroe.

"Those people were complete strangers to me, and knowing this guy was as reckless and as dangerous as he was, he needed to be stopped one way or another," said Sgt. Gary Sharpen with the Shenandoah Police Department. "If I'm put in that position again, I think I'll do the same."

After that, the driver turned around and fled. The suspect lead multiple agencies on a high-speed chase before the car was finally stopped.

Inside the vehicle, police discovered there were two small children, ages 18 months and 4 years old.

They were rescued unharmed.
