NEW PORT NEWS, VA (KGO) -- On Friday, the U.S. Navy officially decommissioned the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The Enterprise called the Bay Area home for almost 25 years.

The ship is also known as "Big E", it was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when commissioned in 1961.

The Enterprise called the Alameda Naval Air Station home from 1965 until 1989. It famously ran aground in the Bay in 1983.

The ship served in nearly every major conflict to take place during its history.
