OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- More than 2,000 people in need will enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, thanks to Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.

On Wednesday, the Warriors announced that Thompson has donated to Oakland's annual citywide Thanksgiving lunch.

In a statement, the star shooting guard said: ""Thanksgiving dinner is something that every family should have the opportunity to enjoy together during the holidays and I'm lucky to have the ability to help those in need enjoy a meal with their loved ones this year. In past years, several of my teammates have stepped up and donated to help make the City of Oakland's Thanksgiving Day meal a reality. It's my pleasure to do it this year for these families and senior citizens in need."

Warriors legend Alvin Attles will serve the attendees for Thompson, who will be at an away game that day against the Miami Heat.

The event contributes to the team's "Play for the Holidays" campaign, aimed to reach out to Bay Area families and youth this month and in December.

Sponsors of the dinner include the city's Human Services Department, Communities United Committee, Alameda County/Oakland Community Action Partnership and Emergency Food Providers Committee.

The event, which is run by volunteers, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel at Oakland City Center. About 2,000 low-income families, seniors, and homeless have been invited to the event.
