Bay Area girl youngest qualifier at US Open
Lucy Li, 11, of Redwood City will tee off in the U.S. Women's Open Thursday as the youngest qualifier in the tournament's history.

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. (KGO) -- The World Cup may have the attention of soccer fans, but golf fans are keeping their eye on one 11-year-old from Redwood Shores.

The Bay Area's own, Lucy Li, is getting ready for the biggest event in women's golf.

On Tuesday, all eyes were on Li as she got in a practice round at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. The U.S. Women's Open gets underway on Thursday.

The Bay Area sixth grader became the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open by winning the sectional at Half Moon Bay in California by seven strokes last month.

Her afternoon press conference drew the largest crowd of the day.

Li showed her age, giggling through the questions and twirling in her seat before it started.
