Warriors star Steph Curry has special connection to Orinda

ORINDA, Calif. (KGO) -- For the second week in a row, Golden State Warriors star and league MVP Steph Curry is on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The headline reads: "My Town, My Team." While Curry plays in Oakland, he actually lives in Orinda.

Since being drafted by the Warriors, Curry has lived in both Oakland and San Francisco. But now he and his family are settled into Orinda where he is the NBA star next door.

When asked if he's the talk of the town, one resident said, "Of course, everybody is talking about him."

Everybody knows his name. And in the Contra Costa County town of Orinda, everybody seems to know him. Or at least they've seen Curry off the hardwood and in the community.

"He was actually here two weeks ago and he signed something," said Ali Youmagul with Sweet Dreams Toy Store.

Curry autographed a gift certificate at the store. The family, along with adorable daughter Riley who stole the spotlight the other night, shops at this local store.

"She actually came in the day after and all the kids in here were freaking out," Youmagul said.

But we hear most of the grownups that run into the Curry's are cool.

"Sometimes he'll walk through this area," said Michael Karp, owner of Table 24.

The restaurant owner says Curry likes his pizza without the paparazzi.

"I think that's why they feel at home because they are able to come in and not get bugged for autographs and other things like that," he said.

In this town square, people are used to seeing the entire Curry clan.

Wife Ayesha gets a little pampering at a local salon. And Warriors fan Daniel Batoy took a picture of his brother with Curry's mom and dad.

"Really nice, really nice people," he said.

ABC7 News found one person who admitted he wasn't quite sure who was buying his cupcakes until other customers pointed out the point guard. Now, a special treat could make it to the menu.

"Maybe blueberries with lemon," said Chih Fang with Republic of Cake. "Maybe some blue and gold. I think that would be a good one for Warriors, what do you think?"
