BART concerned about Trump budget impact

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- BART has big plans, but those plans could be in jeopardy if President Donald Trump gets his way with his new budget.

VTA and BART are obviously concerned. The president's proposed federal budget includes $2.4 billion in cuts to the Department of Transportation.

The Daily Cal reports part of that would eliminate federal funding for the new starts program, which BART hopes will help pay for increasing capacity and funding the extension to San Jose's Diridon station.

That would also include buying new cars and several upgrades and renovations.

BART passengers we spoke with Wednesday morning are concerned about the cuts.

"It concerns me because, you know, in this day and age public transportation is the way to go," said Union City resident Glenn Comp. "It cuts pollution and it's easier to travel."

BART told the Daily Cal that if the funds are cut, it wouldn't impact ticket prices because they come from a different budget.

Of course, Trump's budget proposal is just that - a proposal. It will be up to Congress to work out the details and decide if the funding will be cut.
