OAKLAND, Calif (KGO) -- Chip the chicken has been claimed. The owner of the famous Bay Bridge bird picked her up on Tuesday.

Ken Houston was taking two of his chickens to show off to the children at Stonehurst Elementary School in East Oakland last Wednesday when he stopped at the Oakland Army Base near the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza to check on a work project.

That's when Chip and the other bird flew the coop.

The fleeing fowl kept drivers caged in their cars until the CHP could scoop up Chip and take her to Oakland Animal Services.

Houston was afraid he might have a problem with police.

"I was nervous at first. When I got a phone call from my assistant and they said oh, the chickens are on the highway and I'm like, oh God, Caltrans, CHP," Houston said.

He didn't get into any trouble.

Houston took Chip to see the children on Tuesday. She will stay in a temporary urban garden there.

He is still looking for that second chicken, named Hawk.
