CHP investigating late night shooting on I-80 in Hercules

HERCULES, Calif. (KGO) -- A late night shooting on I-80 in Hercules brings the total number of shootings on East Bay highways to 20 since November.

Investigators are going through the car, trying to find evidence to find out who did this. They're also working on solving the bigger picture.

When the CHP arrived at the crash Thursday night, they quickly realized it had happened again.

"Upon arrival, our officers noted that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle had actually suffered gunshot wounds prior to the collision," CHP Ofc. Daniel Hill said.

This was the 20th highway shooting in the Bay Area since November, the second this week.

This one happened on I-80 in Hercules near the Highway 4 exit.

The 25-year-old driver was shot in the leg. He was treated at the hospital and released.

Hearing that another freeway shooting happened left some drivers feeling unsettled.

"It's a little scary, it's concerning, just because we drive up these highways every day. You never know. You never know if it could be you," Pinole resident Keasha Pittman said.

Officers aren't saying whether he was targeted but point out they don't think the majority of these highway shootings have been random - a fact that eases the minds of some drivers.

"I think, in general, everyone kind of brings about their own reactions from society. If you just kind of proceed with a good general intention toward others, you are going to get that same thing back," Pinole resident Vo Walle said.

CHP officers say there has been a tremendous amount of dialogue about this new disturbing trend and they are trying to figure out how to put a stop to it.

"We are definitely concerned. We are meeting regularly with our allied agency partners. This is a collaborative effort. It's not just the CHP on an island. We have all of our allied agency investigators working together, we're collaborating, sharing information," Hill said.

Gathering evidence in these cases is important but stressful on everyone. The CHP had to shut down all lanes of eastbound I-80 Thursday night for 2.5 hours. They said they would really appreciate it if any witnesses could come forward and contribute to the investigation.
