SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Drivers crossing the Golden Gate Bridge had to deal with traffic problems Saturday due to the Doyle Drive closure.

Cars were backed up as they tried to take the Lincoln Boulevard exit.

Drivers along Marina Boulevard were redirected to Old Mason Street and then onto Lincoln Boulevard to get to the Golden Gate Bridge.

After the new Presidio Parkway opens, drivers will experience a smoother and safer ride between Marin and San Francisco than ever before.

Crews are working around the clock by filling in cement, paving, striping, installing medians and much more.

Drivers faced delays of up to an hour on Highway 101 and Highway 1 on Saturday.

Tourists were among the most confused on which detours to take. ABC7 News spoke to one woman who made the best of her situation. "We took a detour just to get away from the traffic and hopefully the traffic won't be too bad in few minutes when we try to make our way out there," Patricia Garcia said.

Traffic is being directed not only along Marina Boulevard, but also at 19th Avenue and Geary Boulevard just north of the Golden Gate Park.

Officials say construction on Doyle Drive is on schedule and drivers can expect it to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday.
