This new carpool lane stretches southbound on I-880 from Hegenberger Road near the Oakland Coliseum to Marina Boulevard in San Leandro. There it connects with an existing carpool lane, so you can take it all the way to Milpitas.

"880 of course is one of the most heavily used arteries in the Bay Area. It is the most heavily used, north-south commute route in the East Bay. Any time we give people an option of anything other than solo commuting it's going to ease congestion for everybody," said Caltrans Spokesman Bob Haus.

The lane will be open from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
