SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- San Mateo police say the suspect who was shot and killed by CHP officers on Highway 101 Friday was in the process of an armed carjacking.

Police shut down the freeway from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. to collect evidence that was scattered across the roadway from Highway 92 to Hillsdale Boulevard.

The first call came in to the CHP as a vehicle collision and a person with a firearm. But now police say that suspect driving one of the vehicles was attempting an armed carjacking of the vehicle he struck.

The attempted carjacking victim was a 55-year-old woman from the East Bay.

Witnesses say the officers ordered the man to drop his gun before all three opened fire.

The officers rendered aid to the man, who died at the scene.
