CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Two cars fatally struck a 31-year-old San Jose woman who was reportedly walking on a highway near the San Jose, Campbell and Los Gatos borders earlier this morning.

The incident was first reported at 5:09 a.m. on the connector ramp from northbound state Highway 85 to northbound state Highway 17, CHP officials said.

Just prior to the fatal incident, CHP officers received reports of a woman walking along northbound Highway 85 with a backpack and flashlight, according to CHP Officer Ross Lee.

A car traveling about 70 miles per hour was entering the connector ramp when the driver saw a pedestrian standing the roadway. The driver tried to swerve, but was unable to avoid striking the woman, CHP officials said.

A second vehicle traveling about 65 mph behind the first vehicle witnessed the crash, but assumed the pedestrian was some type of debris. By the time the driver realized there was a pedestrian lying in the roadway, he was unable to swerve and drove over the woman, according to CHP officials.

Both vehicles then pulled over to the right shoulder on the connector ramp and called 911.

A Sig-alert was issued at 5:52 a.m. and the connector ramp was closed for nearly three hours as the CHP investigated the fatal incident.

The CHP is currently working to positively identify the woman, Lee said.
