Vallejo firefighters battle fire at metal recycling yard on Mare Island

MARE ISLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Vallejo firefighters responded to a 3-alarm fire on Mare Island that started in the recycling yard of the Alco Iron & Metal company on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters received the call at around 3:30 p.m. and upon seeing the thick smoke as they were leaving the fire station, they immediately declared it a 2-alarm fire.

Footage from Sky7 HD showed heavy black some and flames emerging from the business. The fire is isolated to the scrap metal yard and is blowing east over an unpopulated area.

The smoke is now dissipating but could be seen as far away as El Cerrito.

So far there is no word on the cause of the fire. No injuries have been reported.
