Water main break surprises family in Concord
A water main break sent water shooting 25 feet into the air in front of a Concord home and it couldn't be stopped for hours.

CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- In the East Bay Thursday night, a water main break sent water shooting 25 feet into the air like a fountain for hours. It's a Christmas Eve the Brekle Family won't soon forget.

As of 11 p.m. the water district arrived and was working to get the situation under control on Nebraska Drive in Concord.

The family's nephew said the water main break started with a rattle as the family was inside enjoying Christmas Eve together.

Nolan Brekle said, "We just finished praying and then the next thing we know, the walls started rattling so we came out afterward and water started coming out of the ground. After about half-an-hour it was shooting higher than our heads to where we can't even control it anymore and we don't even know what to do."

The family was lucky because so far, there is no water damage to the home. The water main broke around 6:30 or 7 p.m. and the family days it took the water district a couple of hours to get to the home.

A spokesperson from the water district said that it appeared to be a routine call for some reason and that is partly why it took them some time to get out there.

Workers said they couldn't completely turn off the water or else everyone on the street would be without water. As of 11 p.m. the water district said they were still waiting for PG&E to arrive and help them locate the gas lines before they could start drilling to fix the water main break.
