East Bay workers take precaution when working in heat
PLEASANTON, Calif. (KGO) -- Throughout California on Wednesday, swimming pools were filled and cooling centers opened, as people try to cope with the blazing temperatures of a September heat wave.
At Shadow Cliffs Regional Park in Pleasanton some visited the water to try to stay cool in the 105-degree weather.
Doing construction work can be hot enough, even in the coolest of conditions, but working in these high temperatures can be hazardous to one's health.
Construction worker Yancy McNeely said it is important to "stay highlighted, keep your nice cool rag, so if you don't have any water, you can put the cool rag on your head to keep you cool."
In Emeryville at a construction site, there was a special area for taking breaks out of the sun.
Caleb Cooper from DCI Construction said, "Anytime the weather gets 80 degrees or higher, you have to have your procedures in place, which consists of water for the guys and a cool-down station. And we have a cool down station, down in the basement, where it's almost always 63 degrees."
At Lake Temescal in Oakland, the main way to cool off is closed off, thanks to an algae bloom. That has made swimming in the lake off limits.
