July was Earth's hottest month in recorded history.

Global temperatures averaged 61.86 degrees Fahrenheit last month. That beat monthly highs set in 1998 and 2010 by about 1/7 of a degree.

The first seven months of this year are the hottest January to July span on record.

The federal government began keeping weather records in 1880.
