PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) -- Rain may be a common sight this winter, so officials gave a demonstration on the correct way to sandbag your home in Palo Alto on Tuesday.

First, you should tape a plastic sheet to your wall. Then, layer the sandbags.

It's important to cover the seam at the bottom of the sandbag with the one on top.

Once you're done you should wrap the plastic back on top of the bags.

Officials said now is the time to get prepared in order to take a look at how your house is configured. It's a good idea to walk around the home during a storm to see where water is collecting.

Palo Alto residents can pick up filled sandbags at the city's Municipal Service Center between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Bayshore Road this Sunday.
