SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- At Ocean Beach Friday, it felt almost like summer in the winter. It was so beautiful out that many people on the beach were unaware the water conditions were dangerous, and possibly even life threatening.

A high surf warning was in effect. It was supposed to last until Saturday, but subsided sooner than forecasted.

Mark Arnold is a surfer who understands the strength of the ocean.

"It's not as if most people go to the beach expecting to drown, and that's part of the problem. Not only waves, but rip currents," said Arnold.

What happens is the water goes out in the deep areas. People could walk into a deep area and be swept out.

When we caught up with swimmers, Conrad Dunlap and Toby Moss, they told us all about it.

"We weren't even that far out and feeling them," said Dunlap.
