A winter storm warning is in effect in the Sierra where our latest storm is bringing plenty of new snow to the mountains.

This means a challenge for drivers, but a delight for skiers and businesses.

The National Weather Service tweeted out a warning telling drivers to "leave early if traveling over the Sierra or to Lake Tahoe or Mammoth."

That's because the rain that dumped on the Bay Area earlier Friday is now dropping snow up there.
Caltrans video showed the I-80 at Donner Summit where snow fell and continues to accumulate. Highway 50 at Echo Summit was also experiencing slick roads.

Chains and reduced speeds are required. Squaw Valley spokeswoman Liesel Kenney says the resort is expecting more than two feet of new powder.

"So we've gotten 32 feet of snow, cumulative throughout this season. We have a 12 feet base right now. And the storm coming in right now is going to add to that base," said Liesl Kenney of Squaw. "So we're looking at a very long season this year."

Kenney says skiers may be able to enjoy the slopes into the month of May. A word of caution though, skiers do need to brace themselves for extreme winds this weekend; 50 to 80 mile per hour gusts are expected.

Storms continue to build Sierra snowpack, which is only at 83 percent of normal, something everyone can benefit from.
