The fire started around 2 p.m. Thursday. Highway 50 is closed in both directions from Pollock Pines to Meyer.
There are evacuations between Kyburz and Strawberry. Firefighters are using the new super scooper, a plane that can pick up 1,600 gallons of water in 12 seconds to fight the fire.
The fire is burning about 100 acres and is five percent contained, according to officials from the El Dorado National Forest.
The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Pollock Pines-Camino Community Center.
