Bay Bridge toll worker killed by suspected drunk driver was mother, wife

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- An East Bay family is grieving the loss of a mother and a wife after she was killed by a suspected drunk driver at the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

Si Si Han will be missed by many.

A close relative shared her fears for Han's husband and 10-year-old daughter.

The relative said Han's husband "is devastated, depressed. And then the daughter, she is going to have a difficult time."

Han stepped into Booth 14 just 10 minutes before police say Daniel Berk sped through the toll plaza in a box truck.

Cars were backed up in the lane, waiting to pay.

CHP Officer Vu Williams said the suspect, "hit the last car in line, then caused a chain reaction. That's how all five vehicles were damaged and then continued and struck the booth."

The booth, with Han inside, was thrown several feet.

Berk, who was ejected from his smashed truck, was seriously hurt. He's charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Flags at the toll plaza are at half staff, and Han's long time coworkers and friends are in shock.

Latasha Luster said, "We loved her here. She always smiled and always asked about the family. And I asked about her daughter, her husband, her mother. It's hard right now."

Han moved to the U.S. From Burma when she married her husband, 15 years ago.

She started working for Caltrans as a toll worker, a decade ago, soon after giving birth to her daughter.
