Pop culture is coming to life this weekend in San Jose. Day 1 of Wizard World Comic Con kicked off Friday at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

ABC7 News was there when the doors opened for fans.

"When somebody says to me, I grew up with your work, I enjoyed it, you were part of my childhood, and they still remember that now with their kids in tow, that means I did my job well," artist and storyteller Michael Golden said.

Every artist and every attendee at Wizard World Comic Con has their own story to tell.

"It's more of the community. A lot of people think, oh that's so nerdy, you're into comic books and things like that. But here, everybody's the same," San Jose resident Matthew Morales said.

Wizard World Comic Con has arrived in the Silicon Valley.

Actor Lou Ferrigno is one of the headliners this weekend. "It's not just a comic convention. It's pop culture, where you have entertainment, a lot of joy, a lot of happiness of all different generations," he said.

Whether it's comics or characters, this show has a little bit of something for everyone.

Do you remember Superman Dean Cain? He'll be here to sign some autographs.

According to Team San Jose, the city's convention and visitor's bureau, this three-day event is expected to bring in nearly $1.4 million to the downtown core.

"Most of the time, it's really hard. Everything's like in San Diego and Anaheim. You have to take a plane and three buses, but it's cool to be able to just hop in the car and go have a day. It's great, really," El Cerrito resident Melissa Delapp said.

"Part of me, just giving back, talking to them, I can see their smile. Sometimes women get emotional, they cry, they want to hug me, they want to take pictures, so it's very personal," Ferrigno said.

San Jose is one of nearly two dozen stops around the country.

The three-day-event goes through Sunday. For event details, including celebrity appearances, click here.
