7-Eleven is turning the big "88" and celebrating their birthday with the frozen goodness that is Slurpee!

The popular frozen treat came to be after, in 1965, a 7-Eleven zone manager visiting a store in Texas, noticed an Icee machine and thought it had great sales potential for 7-Eleven stores. Although they were originally sold as "Icees," the name Slurpee was created in May 1967. Today on average, more than 32 million Slurpee drinks are consumed every month, an average of more than 1 million each day.

On Saturday, July 11, also known as 7-Eleven Day, 7-Eleven will celebrate its 88th birthday by inviting customers across the U.S. to enjoy a free small Slurpee drink. Customers can pick up their celebratory Slurpee drink at participating 7-Eleven stores nationwide from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. while supplies last.

If you're a traditionalist, stick to Fanta Cherry, which happens to be the world's most popular Slurpee flavor.

In addition to free Slurpees on Saturday, 7-Eleven is extending the celebration from July 12-18, with special deals for 7Rewards members.
