Fresh Dungeness crab goes on sale after months-long delay

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Fresh Dungeness crab is headed to stores and restaurants around the Bay Area today, ending months of waiting. There are fewer of them, and many desperate crabbers trying to make the most of this short, late season.

Fishermen unloaded their first hauls at Fisherman's Wharf Wednesday night. Many said their catches were lighter than normal, but there is some good news for crab lovers.

"Yeah they're hearty and they're great quality. Yeah they're all hard. Not a soft crab in them and they're really good, good quality," said Daniel Fugere, crab boat captain.

They say it's still too early to tell if they can make up the losses from a four-month delay to the season, because of high levels of a toxic algae, levels are now back to normal.

You can expect to pay anywhere from about $15 to $21 per pound for fresh crab.
