Grizzly Peak fire now 50-percent contained, Oakland Mayor applauds quick response

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The weather is actually helping firefighters in the East Bay, as they work to completely contain a brush fire in the hills above Oakland and Berkeley.

The Grizzly Fire burned 20-acres and at last word is 50-percent contained.

It started along Grizzly Peak Boulevard just east of Tilden Park.

Drone view 7 gave a birds-eye view of the painstaking work that remains on The Grizzly Peak Fire as firefighters and hand crews work on steep hillsides, amid a grove of eucalyptus trees...to eliminate any hot spots.

"We are making headway on the perimeter, making sure we take care of the perimeter... taking care of hot spots, continuing to extinguish hot spots and continue with our mop-up operations," said Dep. Chief Melinda Drayton, with the Oakland Fire Dept.

At the height of the fire Wednesday afternoon, no fewer than 6 agencies were on scene from Oakland, Berkeley, Orinda and surrounding communities, along with ground and air support from Calfire.

"Absolutely, Oakland and all the regional firefighters learned lessons from that 1991 firestorm and that's why we've been so vigilant with the fire today and we will continue to be on top of it until there is no more risk," said Oakland Mayor Libby Shaaf.

The fire never seriously threatened any structures or nearby Tilden Park.
