New UCSF website explores health effects of sugar overconsumption

Developed by a team of health scientists from UCSF, SugarScience.org is designed as an authoritative source for the scientific evidence about sugar and its impact on health.

How much sugar do you eat per day?

A new website designed by U.C. San Francisco scientists helps answer that question.

Sugarscience.org crunches down information from 8,000 scientific papers on the impact of added sugar on our health.

Researchers attribute a drastic rise in obesity and chronic disease to the increasing amount of sugar we eat, many times without our knowledge.

"We haven't all lost our will power all of a sudden in 30 years. The only thing that we can point to that would be explaining this dramatic increase in obesity and chronic disease is a change in the proportion of our diets in added sugar," explains Dr. Laura Schmidt with the UCSF School of Medicine.

Sugarscience.org includes more than 60 different names used to describe hidden sugars.

Researchers will also answer consumer questions about sugar and their health.
