PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) -- Contra Costa County firefighters saved some very small lives after flames gutted a vacant home in Pittsburg on Saturday.

Fire raced through a home being used for storage along Hillcrest Avenue.

It took about an hour to get the fire under control.

One of the firefighters heard some kittens crying for help while he looked for more flames.

"I stuck my head down behind a refrigerator that was outside and I saw a little head move up out of some foam, we had some firefighting foam and water and a tiny kitten, a newborn kitten stuck its head up and meowed," Contra Costa County Fire District Capt. William Pigeon said.

The firefighters gave the kittens oxygen before animal control officers took them to a local shelter for a checkup.
