Crews rescue surfer swept out to sea at Ocean Beach

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Fire crews pulled a surfer to safety at Ocean Beach after he lost his board and was swept out by a rip current.

San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar already reeling from two deaths over the weekend is taking action. "I think we need better education, it can't just be after a tragedy. It has to be year round as well," he said.

Roses mark the spot where two Vallejo high school students were pulled out to sea Saturday.

They were with three other friends, standing in waist deep water when it happened.

M said the warning signs aren't good enough. "I see the signs, you can't understand them. They are multilingual, but I think they need to be done better."

He'd also like to see signs closer to the water.

Sandra Miller said she loves to swim in the ocean, but not here. "I read a sign at Baker Beach that says people have drowned at the beach because of the tides. Guess it put a fear in me," she said.

Vaughn Brown is a surfer and had a close call of his own at Ocean Beach. "I was out in the channel and couldn't get back in. I waved my arms over my head and coast guard picked me up. It worked out well but it was a little spooky," Brown said.

Mar is also proposing using lifeguards during warm weather.

He along with the fire chief and the superintendent of Golden Gate National recreation area will discuss options at a public safety hearing next month.
