Fire burns at metals recycling yard in San Jose
A fire broke out just after 3 p.m. at Schnitzer Steel, a metals recycling yard, in San Jose on Berryessa Road.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A fire broke out shortly after 3 p.m. at Schnitzer Steel, a metals recycling yard, in San Jose on Berryessa Road.

The fire department said the fire began when metal debris caught fire after a transformer blew. The fire put up a lot of black smoke in the area. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the neighborhood around the plant and some businesses, located downwind of the smoke on Commercial Street, were told to evacuate.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.
