SAN FRANCISCO -- A homeless man who died after being beaten by a group of suspects in San Francisco's Financial District early Monday morning has been identified, according to the medical examiner's office.

San Francisco resident Lam Tai, 67, was attacked by a group of "cowards" while he was sleeping in an alley behind buildings near the corner of Montgomery and Sutter streets, a police spokesman said.

San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said investigators are reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to locate a group of three suspects believed to be responsible for Tai's death.

San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan said Wednesday that Lam had been deceased for a while before he was found.

She said that when someone tried to rouse Lam at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday, they found him dead in a sleeping bag.

Esparza said it appears a group of about three people found Lam sleeping there and started beating him. He was not robbed and there was no clear motive.

"It's a vicious crime and people should be outraged that this homeless person was attacked unprovoked and essentially beaten to death," Esparza said Wednesday.

Police are asking anyone with video surveillance in the area or anyone who may have information about the three suspects to contact San Francisco police investigators.

Esparza said that investigators hope to release a description of the suspects soon.
