KENSINGTON, Calif. (KGO) -- The comfort and security of an East Bay neighborhood were shattered Monday morning after an intruder broke into a home and crawled into bed with an 11-year-old girl. It happened around 1 a.m. on Lenox Road in Kensington.

Police in Kensington says they get calls about prowlers all the time, but it usually turns out to be a raccoon or some other animal. This time it was for real and neighbors are in shock.

"People leave windows open," said neighbor Karen Whittemore. "Neighbors know one another. That's really surprising."

"The little girl woke up and called for her mom and her mother came down," said Kensington Police Chief Greg Harman. "By the time the mother got to the little girl's bedroom the suspect had already fled the area."

Then at 4:30 a.m., police in Berkeley arrested the suspect identified as 22-year-old Brian Hubbard. He was about a half mile away from the crime scene, at Colusa and Vincente Avenue. Neighbors say he was knocking on doors

"And he was positively identified by both our victim and the Berkeley victim," Chief Harman said.

"Oh my god, I should have called the cops on this man," witness Natalia Riccardi said.

Riccardi, who lives near the victim's home, says she saw a man matching the suspect's description the day before.

"I mean, I didn't want to call the police because he didn't do anything," she said. "He was just making weird noises."

Hubbard was arrested and charged with burglary and committing lewd acts with a child. Police say there was no connection between the suspect and the victim or her family.

They believe Hubbard chose the victim's home at random.
