Officials investigating officer-involved shooting in Belmont

BELMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- Police are investigating a shooting involving a highway patrol officer that left a man wounded on northbound Highway 101 near Ralston Avenue in Belmont early Sunday morning.

At 3:00 a.m., the CHP, along with the Belmont Police Department, were called out to the scene following reports of a man walking on the highway.

Initial responding law enforcement tried to get the man to come off the roadway. CHP Ofc. John Franzen says the pedestrian had been reported walking back and forth between the northbound and southbound sides of the freeway on all lanes of traffic.

Officers tried to get the man off the freeway but the "suspect refused to cooperate," Franzen said.

CHP officials said an officer tased the man, but it failed to subdue him. In fact, they said moments later the pedestrian pulled out a weapon. "The suspect produced a knife and began lunging towards an officer as he raised the knife over his head. That's when our officer opened fire and the suspect was struck," Franzen said.

The suspect was taken to local hospital where he's being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The officer was not injured.

Belmont police will be working with the district attorney's office and the CHP in the investigation.

The northbound lanes of the 101 were closed for hours and reopened just before 8 a.m.
