Sunnyvale intersection investigated after officer involved shooting
Monday evening a busy intersection was closed in Sunnyvale after a car burglary suspect tried to run over a police officer.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- An investigation into a car burglary in Santa Clara led to an officer-involved shooting near a major thoroughfare in Sunnyvale Monday evening, a police captain said.

A Santa Clara police officer was investigating an auto burglary in Santa Clara city limits and was in the process of stopping a white Mercedes sedan, Sunnyvale police Capt. Shawn Ahearn said.

The officer followed the sedan to South Wolfe Road and East El Camino Real in Sunnyvale around 5:45 p.m. when they came to a stop, Ahearn said.

The officer stepped out of his patrol car and walked toward the sedan, according to Ahearn.

The driver of the sedan then drove at the officer, who in return fired his weapon at the car, Ahearn said.

The sedan then fled north on Wolfe Road at a high rate of speed, he said.

Police did not know how many people were inside the sedan at the time of the incident.

A description of the suspect or suspects was not immediately available.

The officer was not injured in the shooting, Ahearn said.

South Wolfe Road and East El Camino Real is closed as police conduct an investigation and is expected to reopen around 11 p.m. or midnight, he said.
