A Rochester, New York, couple believed to have been aboard a plane that crashed off the coast of Jamaica are being remembered as champions of the local community.

Larry and Jane Glazer were the only passengers aboard a private plane that took off from Rochester this morning bound for Naples, Florida, authorities said. The aircraft stopped responding to radio calls at 10 a.m. ET, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration and continued to fly until it crashed off the coast of Jamaica this afternoon.

Larry Glazer was CEO and managing partner of Buckingham Properties and pioneered Rochester's downtown re-development. The company Glazer founded in 1970 today has more than 60 properties totaling over 10 million square feet, according to the Buckingham Properties website.

The company also holds 300 acres of property in central Florida, according to its website.

Jane Glazer was a math teacher in her early career before she built QCI Direct, a thriving catalog business, according to a 2010 profile of her in Nazareth College's alumni magazine.

The couple's three children said in a statement that they "are devastated by the tragic and sudden loss of our parents."

"They loved and appreciated the opportunity to help build the community of Rochester, and we thank everyone in the community for their expressions of support," the statement said. "We understand that there are many questions yet to be answered about today's events, and we too are awaiting answers. At this time, we would appreciate the ability to mourn privately."

Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren said the city would fly flags at half-mast for the Glazers as well as Police Officer Daryl Pierson, who was shot in the line of duty.

"It is difficult to put into words how much Larry Glazer has meant to our community," the mayor said. "Larry worked hard to return a sense of vitality and excitement to our Center City. His efforts helped to lift our spirits and restore our sense of optimism. He has been a treasured friend and partner."
