It happened on Sunset Boulevard and Lawton Street.

It doesn't appear that the teenager attended any schools near the shooting, but officials were aware the shooting happened just blocks away from the schools.

Investigators marked each of the several bullet holes that the white Pontiac that the 15-year-old was driving when he was shot. A 16-year-old passenger was unharmed.

The young man behind the wheel was pronounced dead at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where family members had gathered outside the emergency department.

"Anytime a minor is killed or harmed by gun violence, it's terrible," San Francisco resident Mahor Dhari.

Residents of the Sunset District aren't used to seeing this level of gun violence.

St. Ignatius College Prep is four blocks away from the crime scene, but administrators took no chances.

The school was on lockout following the shooting -- meaning no one could leave campus during that time.

Parents were alerted by email.

When asked what his reaction was parent Derek Hom said, "Because I know things can happen and it doesn't really matter what neighborhood. It can happen anywhere."

At this point, the motive is unclear.

Investigators hope witness accounts and possible security video in the area can help bring in leads.

"There was talk of a mention of a vehicle in that area at that time so at this time we're going to try to see if there's anything related that we can find," said San Francisco police officer Giselle Talkoff.

In the meantime, the shooter remains at large.
