Rohnert Park officer draws gun on innocent resident

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. (KGO) -- Rohnert Park police are investigating an incident where an officer is seen drawing his gun on a man who wasn't accused of committing any crime.

It happened during a heated verbal altercation in front of the man's home and the police department's phones have been ringing off continuously since cellphone video of the incident went viral.

Someone who knows the person who shot the video told ABC7 News that there have been past contacts between police and a member of this person's family. It is unclear at this time whether this had anything to do with this particular incident.

Many people who saw the video questioned whether the officer was justified in drawing his gun. "We're going to look at our protocols and determine whether or not they were followed and then also look at the protocols to make sure that we're insuring the safety of our community and our officers," Rohnert Park City Manager Darrin Jenkins said.

Jenkins said police will investigate the incident that occurred on July 27.

In the video, the officer is seen driving up to Don McComas' home while he loaded up his boat on his driveway. Then, the police cruiser stopped for several minutes.

McComas pulled out his cellphone and started recording and the officer did the same on his phone. Then, the officer got out of his car and told the man to take his hand out of his pocket. The man responded by telling the officer to put down the gun.

McComas complied and put the items from his pocket on his car. "No you don't touch me, you don't touch me," he said.

McComas kept asking the officer why he's at his home and if he's charged with anything. "Are you accusing me of a crime? Are you suspecting me of a crime," he asked.

Then McComas blurts out that police are corrupt and done enough to his family.

The officer seemed bewildered. "Are you some kind of constitutionalist, crazy guy, something like that," the officer said.

Finally the officer left tellling McComas to have a nice day and to put the video it on YouTube.

Mccomas did not answer ABC7 News' calls.
