SF bomb squad investigates suspicious package in Mission District
Residents were evacuated Friday night while the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package in San Francisco's Mission District.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A two-block area in San Francisco's Mission District was evacuated Friday night, while the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package with pipes and wires sticking out of it.

San Francisco police roped off several blocks near the intersection of 23rd and Bartlett streets after someone found the suspicious package around 8 p.m. A bomb squad robot was brought in to investigate it.

Residents, in the building closest to the package, were evacuated for a short time and then allowed to return before 11 p.m. Many people being evacuated from their homes were unaware of what was happening until police escorted them out of the evacuation zone. People were seen carrying their pets down the street, but really had nowhere to go.

The San Francisco police say the suspicious package appeared to be a legitimate active device with a timer and wires, but after investigating, it was found to be a hoax device.
