Truck crashes into home near San Carlos, one injured

SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KGO) -- A family, who just finished remodeling their San Carlos home, will need to start over again after a gravel truck crashed into it Monday afternoon.

The big-rig loaded loaded with gravel toppled over onto the house.

"You can see, it's gone and taken out the bedroom, probably the entire bathroom, closet and maybe some of the dining area," said Joanne Hurlow. Her parents own the house.

She says her mom usually takes a nap in her bedroom at about the time that truck smashed into the house, but both her parents were not home. They're on their way back from a vacation in Hawaii.

The crash was reported at 1:13 p.m. at 260 Windsor Drive near Winding Way in the unincorporated community of Devonshire.

This is the second time that their house has been smashed by a runaway vehicle. An SUV came crashing into it last time.

But the family says this time is much worse.

"Once the truck gets removed, they'll go and see if the structure is okay and if we're able to go back inside it," said Hurlow.

"The gravel truck came down the hill and he said he lost his brakes, he said the brakes went out and he went right into the house, right into the front room. And when I heard it, my son was outside and in our house, you heard a loud 'boom'!" said Jackie Luppi, a neighbor.

Luppi says her son helped the driver, who was bleeding, out of the truck.

The CHP says the 28-year-old driver was rushed to Stanford Medical Center with non life- threatening injuries.

This is a crash that has affected the whole neighborhood.

"He hit a power pole and a telephone pole, so all the people in the area are going to be without power and without communication, not only that, but we've had them stay in place until we could clear the area," said CHP Officer Art Montiel.

Emergency crews figure it will take a few hours to remove the massive tractor trailer truck from the house.
