Woman convicted in McDonald's shooting after not receiving bacon on cheeseburger

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A woman who fired a handgun at a McDonald's drive-thru after they served her cheeseburger without bacon was convicted today, March 26.

According to ABC affiliate WZZM, Shaneka Monique Torres, 30, was found guilty by Kent County jurors, who deliberated for about an hour before returning the guilty verdicts. She faces up to seven years in prison.

On the night of Feb. 9, 2014, Torres and a friend at stopped by the McDonald's drive-thru, ordered bacon cheeseburgers, but then complained to the manager that they did not receive bacon on the burgers. The manager offered a complimentary bacon cheeseburger on their next visit.

When Torres and her friend returned to the McDonald's at 3 a.m. on Feb. 10, they were enraged to find that they did not receive their coveted bacon yet again.

Torres lashed out at the drive-thru employee, according to WZZM, pulled out a handgun and fired one round. The bullet shattered the driver's side window of her Chevy Tahoe and went straight through the restaurant.

Torres was arrested 30 minutes later at her home, only about a mile away from the McDonald's.

Defense attorney John Beason said the shooting was an accident and had nothing to do with the bacon-less cheeseburger. The defense, however, contradicted what witnesses said had happened.

Torres was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm into a building. She was also charged with felony use of a firearm, which carries a mandatory two-year sentence.

She is due back in Grand Rapids District Court April 21 for sentencing, the same day she is to appear in court for another matter: explaining why she missed a work crew assignment tied to her conviction of driving with a suspended license.
