LOS GATOS, Calif. (KGO) -- A new family has moved into Los Gatos Creek in Santa Clara County.

A beaver was caught on camera exploring its new home. The kit and its parents live nearby.

The South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition says this is the first time in 170 years that beavers have returned to the creek.

Volunteers are cleaning up waterways to preserve the wildlife.

"If we don't do this, what are we leaving to the next generation," questioned Steve Holmes of the South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition. "And it really concerned me when we first started. You could go into these areas and there was so much trash that when your feet were walking through these stream beds, you were walking on trash."

Volunteers are celebrating the beaver family.

Over the weekend they painted a mural, highlighting the animals they're trying to protect.
