BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A Berkeley man ordered a pizza and wings from Domino's and got more than that - a lot more -- when he found stacks of cash inside the delivery box.
"I ordered some pizzas and I thought I was going to have the day off. I was going to sit at home and enjoy my relaxation," Mike Vegas said.
This story starts with the ordinary. Vegas called up Domino's and ate just one slice before putting the rest in the fridge. It wasn't until several hours later that he noticed: "My phone started blowing up and I wasn't looking at the random messages. I was at work so I wasn't answering," he said.
Those phone calls were from the delivery driver, who had been on his way to the bank with just one more delivery to make.
He put the cash in the wings box for safekeeping, but made a big mistake.
"About 5 a.m., I got home from work and went to my refrigerator and pulled out what I thought was wings. It turned out to be 1,300 bucks," Vegas said.
That's right. Sitting in Vegas' fridge, in the wings box, was loads of cash.
"I think it's 666 here and 632 here, about $1,300 total," he said.
It's one of those moments where you wonder, what you would do?
"I wrote a Facebook post and of course there's a long list of people arguing you should keep it, you shouldn't keep it,you should keep it, you shouldn't keep it" he said. "I wanted to keep it, believe me. But I can't, I can't do that."
So ABC7 watched as he walked it in. "Thank you so much for this, honest people are hard to find these days," Domino's Pizza General Manager Zia Mumtaz said.
And it looks like karma might be a real thing. "Just to thank you, we're going to offer you free pizza for a whole year," Mumtaz said.
It's an offer Vegas plans to take the chain up on. "I'm going to have to start working out more, obviously," he joked.
Vegas says he sympathizes with the driver because back when Vegas was 16 years old, his very first job was as a pizza delivery man for Pizza Hut. Vegas added that he's just glad no one got in trouble.
