Fundraiser launched for East Bay teen paralyzed in accident

DANVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- There's a growing push to raise money for the family of an East Bay teenager who was injured in a freak accident the day before his high school graduation.

Jake Javier broke his neck when he fell into a friend's pool June 9. He's now paralyzed from the neck down.

The San Ramon Valley High School senior was a standout on the football team and had planned to walk on to the Cal Poly team in the fall.

On Sunday night, several hundred people turned out in Danville for a vigil in his honor.

Family friend Bijan Shokrollahi talked about his recovery.

"He is making some progress," he said. "And we're just hoping that he continues to make progress like he has been. And knowing Jake, he is a fighter and he will fight every single day to make progress."

Jake has already undergone surgery to stabilize his spine, but he does remain hospitalized.

He has a long road ahead, so friends have started a GoFundMe page.

It's already met its goal of $150,000, but they're still taking donations to help Jake's recovery.
