Stores are once again announcing their plans to either start Black Friday early or remain closed for Thanksgiving.
As they did last year, outdoor recreation company REI is remaining closed not only on Thanksgiving but also on Black Friday. They are instead encouraging customers to forgo the shopping to spend time outside, and they said more than 1 million people participated last year.
For many, though, Thanksgiving and Black Friday are the time to make progress on holiday shopping. According to the National Retail Federation, 34.6 million people shopped in stores on Thanksgiving Day in 2015. That's only a portion the 151 million who shopped either in stores or online at some point over Thanksgiving weekend.
