49ers fans react to Colin Kaepernick's protest after victory against Rams

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- This was not your average home opener as the 49ers have been making national headlines because of quarterback Colin Kaepernick's refusal to stand during the national anthem and he continued his protest Monday night.

Some 49ers fans ABC7 News spoke with shared their opinions on Kaepernick's ongoing protest during the national anthem.

Arie Groen has loved the team ever since he was kid, even though he's never lived in California.

He and his Niner friend from New York have mixed feelings about Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem. "It's not the right place, not the right time, but you know what? You can't be mad at him," Groen said.

"I respect the man for doing that. I don't think he did it at the right moment, but it is what it is," Andre Burgos said.

Tim Tillman, of Sacramento, supports Kaepernick whole-heartedly. "I love Kaepernick. I love the fact he's going to take a stand for himself and on the national stage," Tillman said.

Willie Turner turned heads sporting red, white and blue over his red and gold. "Kaepernick can do whatever he wants. I wore this jacket today in support of the police, the military and those who still believe this is a great country," he said.

After Kaepernick first sat out the national anthem at a preseason game, Santa Clara police officers made sure the team and the public knew they didn't have to volunteer to work shifts at Levi's Stadium.

But ahead of the home opener, the police chief told ABC7 News there was never going to be a boycott and officers would work at the stadium as they always have.
