49ers, Garrett Celek nearing long-term extension

The San Francisco 49ers and tight end Garrett Celek are close to agreeing on a long-term contract, a league source told ESPN.

Celek's one-year contract is set to expire in March.

The younger brother of Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek started a career-high eight games in 2015 while setting career highs in receptions (19), yards (186) and touchdowns (three).

Garrett Celek will play this season for head coach Chip Kelly, who was hired by the 49ers after he was fired by the Eagles, where he was Brent Celek's head coach.

With last season's trade of veteran tight end Vernon Davis, fifth-year pro Garrett Celek should have a better opportunity at playing time this coming season.

Celek, 26, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 by the 49ers.
