SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Former 49ers Hall of Famer Steve Young talked to ABC7 News Sports Director Larry Beil about what makes San Francisco a great city to host the Super Bowl and his relationship with Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak.

He also talked about the comparison between Colin Kapernick and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

"Well, some of it, Kap's gotta take responsibility for it," he said. "Things didn't break his way, a lot happened out of his control and that makes things more difficult, and that degree of difficulty seemed to run him down a little bit. He needs to be able to carry more water. So that's part of it, part of it's him. Part of it is that things just kind of fell apart around him. Cam has all the support, they've built a team that asked Cam to do what he's exactly what he's great at. He keeps building off that and becomes more of an assassin from the pocket. And that's what Kap was going to do, right? So all the things that the 49ers were a two years ago, the Carolina Panthers are and they have been. So it's that consistency over many years. So Kap lost that consistency. It's just all those things that disappeared and then it was too much for him. And unfortunately it drove him off the field."

When asked if Chip Kelly can resuscitate the Kap's career, Young said, "No, Colin Kapernick needs to resuscitate the career of Colin Kapernick. Chip Kelly and the offense may help, but I think he has to be able to withstand all the rigor that is reclaiming his place on the field. That's in the locker room, that's with the fans, that's with the team, that's all the aspects that are really hard for him. You know, the detail work, the boring monotonous studying that you need to do to be great to be an NFL quarterback. We know he has the talent, he has the physical skills, but the soft skills are what he needs to work on. Chip being there doesn't hurt, but Kap needs to do the work to actually reclaim it."
